Boukman, the man who inspired my name, is an extremely important figure of African struggle in the Americas. At the then secret location of Bois Caïman, he presided over a meeting on August 14, 1791 (along with Cécile Fatiman). There, he inspired the initial revolts that grew to become the successful Haitian Revolution. It was the first insurrection of enslaved Africans that resulted in a new republic run by Africans in the West. Celebrating this same spirit of rebellion, I am embarking on a brief tour, Bois Caïman 2016, bringing music and messages to the rebels.
